A typical floating solar power plant installation consists of solar panels on pontoons tied to the bottom of a body of water (lake, river, etc.). Floating or underwater cables transmit direct current to an inverter on shore, where it is converted to alternating current and sent to the local grid. The main thing to consider is that the systems must withstand strong winds and waves, the panels must be resistant to corrosion, and the anchors must serve 25 years or more.

Floating systems also offer several advantages over land-based systems: the most obvious is that they do not take up valuable land that could be used for agriculture or other development. They are easier to install than ground-based or rooftop systems. They can also improve the environment; blocking sunlight from reaching the water can reduce evaporation and prevent algae blooms. And since solar panels become less efficient as they heat up, the cooling effect of the water can increase their energy capacity by as much as 20%
